Getting Started with Your Book
At BookWise Publishing, we are interested in you and your book at whatever stage you might be in—from an idea to a completed manuscript and beyond.
From the Idea
So let’s begin at the idea stage. If you feel confident that you can write the book, great! But if not, we have ghostwriters available to you who are published authors. And their rates are very reasonable.
To the Manuscript
We have an excellent editing staff. All of the editors are published authors and excellent at their craft. They will perform content and line editing at very competitive rates and they are very fast.
Traditional Publishing versus Self-Publishing
If you’re interested in finding an agent to represent you and your book and ultimately finding a traditional publisher, BookWise Publishing can help you with your query letter or a book proposal. Our writers and editors are very experienced in crafting these documents, and they are critical.
However, if you want to self-publish, when your manuscript is completed and fully edited, you are ready for design.
Design
In order to get an idea of what you are looking for to visually represent your book, our designers like you to provide some examples of books who “look” grabs you, from the cover to the inside of the book. Go online
to Amazon.com and just copy and paste images of books you like. Or go to the bookstore and take your digital camera and send us the images. This gives us a direction to take.
Also, if there is a specific image or photograph you are looking for for a cover, you can go online to web sites such as iStockPhoto.com and copy and paste images that appeal to you. You can buy those images, have them recreated and photographed by our photographers, or you can hire an illustrator and have a custom image created. Our goal is to find the right image for the price you can afford.
Marketing
Marketing starts with your idea. We’ll help you outline a marketing plan that you’ll start from the day you have your idea until the launch of your book. We can assist with the outline
Education & Workshops
Throughout the process, we offer education, book camps, workshops and learning to help you become a better writer, author and marketer.

We live in an era that is so complex that there is no longer a jack-of-all-trades. In fact I can’t remember the last time I heard that term, and yet those who self-publish are to their detriment attempting to be just that, a jack-of-all-trades. I’ve been taught to do what I can, and find smart people to help with the rest. For example, it has been years since my wife would let me climb a ladder to service the swamp cooler. Yes it costs a little to have experienced mountain goat men with the right equipment to come out twice a year to take care of it. Every time I see them go up that steep roof I think of how much we save in peace-of-mind. They should probably be paid double, but of course, I don’t tell them that. I’m not stupid.
Self-Publishers have many tasks to do before a book is complete and ready to sell:
1. It has to be written. It is assumed that authors already know how to do this, but sometimes they forget things in their haste to finish. What things? Oh, how about making sure the plot works, or checking to see if it has a beginning, middle, and end? And then there is the P.O.V. (point-of-view). Have you ever read a book where it starts as first person personal, switches to third person, and tries two or three vantage points before the end? It may have made sense to the author, but not to the audience.
2. Editing is usually an area where authors think they can save expense. After all, don’t they have writing skills equivalent to the task? The simple answer is NO! We’ve all heard the lawyer’s maxim that goes he who represents himself in court has a fool for a client. The same is true of authors. Before you get offended really think about this. Our brains have a magnificent ability to alter reality. I saw a demonstration on television where the host brought out two teams of young ball players and instructed the audience to count how many times the ball was passed. To make it even more difficult, there were three or four balls in play. I watched very carefully until I was totally confused at the number of passes. Then the host came out and asked for a count to see who were the most observant. Then he said, “How many of you saw the witch?” What? The host stood there and told us that a witch in full costume and broomstick walked into the center of the action, stopped, waved at the crowd, and then walked off the stage on the other side. No way. I didn’t see a pointy hatted person at all. He was crazy. Then they did a replay. They slowed the action down and the host pointed out the very moment the witch stepped onto stage, her progress through the ballplayers, her wave to the audience and finally her exit. I didn’t see it, or maybe I should say I did see it but my brain discarded the image as being irrelevant to the task at hand. The same is true with self-editing. You will never find all of your own errors because you know what it is supposed to say. When you are advised to hire editors please understand that it isn’t a criticism of your ability, it is merely making sure that you won’t let the witch get by you.
3. How many editors should you have? At least three. You will need an editor for content, another for grammar and spelling, and finally a proofreader. If you do this will you have a perfect book? No. I once read that Webster’s goes through 132 proofing steps before publishing a new dictionary. Are they ever 100% mistake proof? Again it’s a no. Don’t let it discourage you because errors can be fixed on the reprints.
4. Never hire your nephew who is “good at art” to prepare the book for printing. Designing a book and creating an exciting cover is a high skill. Don’t cheapen your book and lessen its appeal by bypassing the experts. Ask yourself if you would go to your nephew carpenter for dental work because he is pretty good with tools and knows how to use a drill? Also don’t expect a good graphic artist worth their salt to work for less than your last root canal. Pay them what they are worth. At first the cost may ouch a little, but when the work is done you’ll be happy you made the right decision.
5. Now comes the part that I do. I manage the printing. Printing for the novice can be a minefield. Self-Publishing authors come in two types. First the truly bewildered, and second are the I can do it myself group. Both types need a lot of help. The truly bewildered can be easier to work with because they know they need help. The problem is that they are easily distracted. Someone tells them that they are doing the wrong thing and they change directions. Some slick salesman tells them that another way is better and they switch again. Instead of becoming educated they get even further bewildered. The I can do it myself group will often go out and get competitive bids, which is fine, but they generally don’t know the right questions to ask so they are often subject to incomparable bids. If you can’t compare apples to apples, why bother? It hurts me to say this about my industry, but the sales strategy of some printers is a three card Monty. If you know the game you’ll come out fine. If you don’t you may lose your shirt. The best strategy is not to play.
6. It is true that a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing. If you feel that you must do my job for yourself at least use this list to guide you:
i. Tell them the finished size, height and width.
ii. What kind of cover, hardback with dust jacket, printed hardcover, perfect bind (standard glue or PUR), saddle stitch, coil, wire-o, or perfect bind?
iii. If hardback what type of material do you want? Leather, cloth, paper, or something more exotic?
iv. Do you require foil stamp on spine and face, or other specialty effects like embossing or die cutting?
v. End sheets, printed, color, or white?
vi. Coatings, film lamination (gloss or matte), UV coat, aqueous coat, press varnish, or none?
vii. Now how about the text? Begin with paper.
1. Coated: Gloss, Dull, Matte, or Satin?
2. Uncoated?
3. Textured or Smooth?
4. White or off-white?
5. Acid free?
6. Recycled content 100% or less>
7. Weight: 20 lb. bond, 24 lb. bond, 50, 60, 70, or 80 pound text?
8. Ground wood, free sheets, or rag?
viii. Prepress, what kind of files can the printer accept? Does your designer work in that format?
ix. PC or Mac?
x. Are bleeds included if needed?
xi. Low res or high res graphics?
xii. Black & White, some color pages, all color pages?
xiii. Page number correctly calculated? One sheet = 2 pages.
xiv. Were index, title page, and blank pages included in page count?
xv. Shipping and delivery, where does the book ship to or deliver to? Long distance shipping boxes cost more than local.
Every item on this list can affect the printers bid and your cost. If you fail to get the same exact information to every printer bidding the job you won’t know if you have real comparisons and how, pray tell, can you make an intelligent decision without knowing?
The sheer numbers of printers claiming to be experts in book printing is baffling. Do you know the difference between on-demand, digital, and offset printing? Here’s a thumbnail description to help you start out on the right foot.
1. On-demand is a term used by digital printers who are seeking to print books in very low quantities from one to twenty-five. You’ll pay a very high unit cost going this way, but your total expense will usually be less. I say usually because there are wide variations in on-demand costs and services. It’s a buyer beware situation.
2. Digital book presses use much the same processes and equipment as on-demand printers, but they are geared for larger quantities. They too can and are willing to print from one to twenty-five copies, but they excel in quantities as high as 1,000. Because their customers have deeper pockets than the on-demand guys you can save money utilizing their services.
3. From 1,000 up, there is no doubt that offset printing rules. It is in printing larger quantities that unit cost really decreases.
For example a recent bid I gave an author went like this:
i. 500 books = $7.44 each
ii. 1,000 books = $4.39 each
iii. 2,000 books = $2.87 each
iv. 3,000 books = $2.35 each
v. 5,000 books = $1.94 each
To really make money as a self-publisher, you must decrease the cost of manufacturing the book. My advice is print as many as you can afford to print, but not one copy more than you can sell.
Finally, realize that you aren’t a printing expert. Unless you’ve worked in the business for thirty years you can’t understand the ins and outs. The way to be kept from making a big mistake is to get an angel to sit on your shoulder. The way most self-publishing authors especially in the I can do it myself group do is they go to a printer, or visit an Internet site where they are immediately assigned a sales rep. Remember, the sales rep has one objective, and one objective only, and that is to secure your business for their company so they will get a commission. No matter how sincere they seem, just like a politician, they will tell you what you want to hear. That’s their job. I know, because I worked as a rep for printing companies for over a decade. Over the last twenty I’ve been self-employed as a printing broker. My job intention is now different. Instead of trying to force the square peg into the round hole I find a fit for the customer and the printer. For this service I earn a small markup that is roughly equivalent to the sales commissions they pay their employees. I am in and out of printers all the time and negotiating prices on a daily basis to get a win-win for all involved.
If you will let me, I will be the angel on your shoulder.

By Karen Raugust
The Consumer Products Safety Information Act of 2008 called for the amount of lead in children’s products to decline from the currently mandated 300 parts per million (ppm) to 100 ppm, “if technically feasible,” on August 14, 2011. After collecting input from a variety of industries—most of which were against this provision—and other groups, the Consumer Products Safety Commission formally voted yesterday to allow the 100 ppm limit to take effect. By a 3-2 vote, the Commissioners ruled there is no evidence that the lower limit is not technically feasible.
The new limit affects book publishers much less than many other industries, since spiral coils and saddle-stitching are virtually the only metal components used (except in some book-plus products). Gary Jones, assistant v-p of environmental, health, and safety affairs at the Printing Industries of America, points out that coils and saddle-stitching may come from scrap metal, and that lead is a potential contaminent during the recycling process. “All of the testing data we have seen show that coils and saddle-stitching wire have trace amounts of lead and are well below the standards,” Jones says. “But some suppliers to the manufacturers of coil and saddle-stitching wire can’t say that lead would never be found in the metal.”
Testing of each batch of metal prior to it being sent to the coil or saddle-stitching vendor, or testing of each batch of coil or wire by the vendor, would catch these aberrations. If the metal, coil or wire exceeded the limits, it would have to be used for a non-children’s product or destroyed. So the main issue for publishers is not the technical feasibility of producing spiral-bound or saddle-stitched books with less than 100 ppm of lead. Rather, it is the cost of preventing metal that exceeds the limits from getting into the manufacturing process and then having to dispose of any metal that doesn’t meet the requirement.
While children’s products must contain fewer than 100 ppm of lead as of August, there is still a stay of enforcement on the CPSIA’s testing requirements until December 31 of this year. The CPSC has not yet issued its testing rule, which has long been awaited by publishers of novelty, book-plus and certain other titles. (“Ordinary” children’s books that contain only exempt components do not need to be tested, although they still must adhere to the lead limits. Items such as paper, board, and process inks are exempt; elements like laminants and some adhesives are not.)
Part of the reason for the delay is that the CPSC is waiting to see what happens in Congress with an amendment to the law, the Enhancing CPSC Authority and Discretion Act of 2011. It was put forth earlier this year and is currently stalled.
Some observers of the legislative process believe that during the next (as-yet-unscheduled) mark-up session, where House members can introduce amendments to the ECADA, a hoped-for provision to entirely exclude ordinary children’s books and other printed matter from the Act may be proposed. Another possibility is an amendment that would ease the requirement for mandatory third-party testing and allow manufacturers to implement “reasonable testing” programs. (The ECADA, as it stands, also addresses libraries’ concerns about the Act, by removing the requirement that older books, as well as newly manufactured products, must adhere to CPSIA requirements.)
However, even if these amendments are introduced, there are many steps remaining before the ECADA would become law, and not much time before the session ends and the process would start over. “We’re close, but yet we’re far away,” Jones says.
